How to appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode build answers from pages Google has already indexed and trusts. To appear, your pages need to be eligible for Google Search, answer the question directly, carry clear entity signals and be backed up by other credible sites. Google says there is no special markup required for its AI features.
What AI Overviews and AI Mode are
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of many Google results, with links to the pages they draw from. AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, where people can ask longer questions and follow-ups and get a full AI-written answer with sources. Both are built on Google Search's index, so they reward many of the same things.
How Google chooses sources for AI answers
Google has said its AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible to appear as a snippet in Search. For more complex questions, AI Mode breaks the question into related searches and combines the results. That means your page does not have to rank first for the original question. It needs to be the clearest, most trustworthy answer to one part of it. See how AI chooses its sources.
A six-step checklist
- Make pages indexable and snippet-eligible. Check Search Console for indexing issues, and make sure important pages don't carry
nosnippetor restrictive robots settings. - Answer the question in the first paragraph. Lead with a direct, self-contained answer, then add detail. AI answers quote the clearest passage.
- Cover the follow-up questions. Cost, timing, suitability, location and comparisons, the things people ask next, each answered on the page.
- Use structured data that matches the page. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Article schema help Google understand the page, as long as they reflect visible content.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Categories, services, service areas, hours and reviews all feed Google's understanding of your business. See our Google Business Profile and entity setup.
- Earn corroboration. Reviews, directories and articles that describe you in the same terms your site does.
What doesn't help
- Keyword stuffing, or pages written for the algorithm instead of the customer.
- Schema describing content that isn't on the page.
- Mass-produced AI content with nothing original in it.
- Chasing a single screenshot. AI Overviews vary by query, location and time.
How to measure it
Google includes traffic from its AI features in Search Console's overall web search performance, but doesn't yet break it out separately. So track a fixed set of priority questions, record whether an AI Overview or AI Mode answer appears, and whether you are named or linked. Our measurement guide explains the method.
